Hebe, the Greek Goddess of youth and the cupbearer to the Gods at Mount Olympus, was believed to possess the strong power of rejuvenation and personified eternal youth and everlasting beauty. According to Greek mythology, Hebe the daughter of Zeus and Hera, married Hercules, after he ascended to Mount Olympus.
As the cup-bearer in Heaven, she poured the nectar to the gods when they were assembled. Hebe is typically featured in the sculpture as the beautiful goddess in a stately pose holding the cup and a vase containing the rejuvenating waters from the legendary fountain of youth.
Her chief duty was to offer nectar and ambrosia to the gods. Through Hebe serving nectar, ambrosia, and the fountain of youth water, the gods are kept eternally young and are protected from the attrition of time. Thus, the gods remained strong and beautiful, while Hebe was the personification of eternal youth.
At times she was known also as goddess of pardon and forgiveness. Other times she has been known to help Hera prepare her chariot and has bathed Ares after battles. Above all others, Hebe has been known as the eternal goddess of beauty and youth because she possesses strong power of rejuvenation. In Rome, she was known as Juventas, the origin of the word “juvenile”, which symbolized youth, vivacity, élan, and beauty which are the characteristics of the tender period in human life.
