Pre & Post Photorejuvenation Treatment Instructions

Call office with any questions or concerns.

I understand that failure to carefully follow the instructions below may affect my treatment outcome and increase the likelihood or severity of complications. I agree to review and adhere to these instructions prior to each appointment.

Prior to Your Appointment

  • Avoid sun tanning for at least 2 weeks prior to treatments. This will also be required after treatments. You must avoid self-tanning creams for at least 1 week prior to treatments.
  • Do not use any medication that causes photosensitivity for at least 72 hours prior to laser treatments. If you are taking a prescription medication that causes photosensitivity, please contact your prescribing physician to discuss your options.
  • Do not use Accutane (or products containing isotretinoin) for at least 6 months prior to treatments. Use of Retin-A (or products containing tretinoin) is acceptable up to 5 days before treatment, provided there is no skin reaction present.
  • We recommend that you avoid the use of aspirin, ibuprofen and other anti-inflammatory or blood thinning medications at least three days prior to treatments, as these will increase the likelihood of bruising.
  • The treatment area must be free of any open sores, lesions or skin infections. For treatment of pigmented skin lesions, you should consult a specialist if there is a family or personal history of skin cancer or if you have these concerns.

On The Day of Your Appointment

  • Shave any hair present in the area to be treated. Men should shave the beard area twice in succession in order to ensure as close a shave as possible.
  • Gently wash the area to be treated, removing makeup, lotion, etc. Do not apply any creams, lotions or other products to the area except a topical anesthetic (if being used).
  • If you have elected to use a topical anesthetic, do so only after reviewing all cautions associated with its use. Apply and use as directed prior to arrival.
  • If applicable, dress so that you may modestly expose the treatment area.
  • The timing of each patient's appointment is critical. In order for us to keep all patients on schedule we ask that you please be on time for your appointments.

After Your Treatment

  • You will have a mild sunburn sensation following treatment that is usually gone within a few hours. Skin redness, flaking, mild bruising and/or slight edema (swelling) are normal and may last a few days. Blistering is uncommon and when it occurs it is generally not serious. Pigmented areas may begin to flake after a few days.
  • Cold compresses (not ice) and recommended skin care products may be useful to reduce swelling or discomfort. You may take over-the-counter pain or anti-inflammatory medication. Hydrocortisone (steroid) cream may decrease any itching or skin irritation. Antibiotic ointment (such as Neosporin) may be used if skin is broken, to prevent infection.
  • Your skin will be fragile for 2-3 days. Use gentle cleansers, but do not rub the skin vigorously and avoid hot water during this time. Skin moisturizers may be used immediately and makeup can be applied if the skin is not broken.
  • It is important to avoid sun exposure and tanning creams between treatments. Use SPF 35 or greater on the treatment area at all times.
  • The treatment area may be left open and uncovered with no bandage or special dressing required. Do not scrub or exfoliate the area. Do not use any products on the treated area without first consulting our staff.
  • In the rare case that you experience any blistering or scabbing, please call us as soon as possible. Contact us if you experience persistent or unusual redness, swelling or drainage, as antibiotics may be necessary. If any pigment changes are bothersome or persist beyond 4 weeks, please discuss this with us.

Post Restylane® Treatment Instructions

  • Immediately after treatment, the most commonly reported side effects were temporary redness and swelling at the injection site. These effects typically resolve within two to four days with cold packs.
  • Cold compresses may be used immediately after treatment to reduce swelling. Make sure that the compresses are only applied to one side of the lips at a time with bare fingers.  If you are still numb, you will not realize how cold your face is becoming.  As a rule of thumb: if your hand is cold, so are your lips; change sides. Save your ice pack, as intermittent 20 minute sessions of icing will reduce any pain or swelling for up to the next 4 days.  If the inconvenience continues beyond four days or if other concerns arise, please contact us.
  • Avoid touching the treated area within six hours following treatment. The area can then be gently washed with soap and water, and make-up may be worn the next day.
  • Don't love them or hate them until 5 days have passed. Since Restylane is hydrophilic (water-loving), there is always a period of swelling where one cannot judge size or evenness. If after 2-4 weeks have passed and the augmentation is not satisfactory, you may need more product. This is more common after the age of 40.
  • The product integrates into your body for up to a year, and evidence shows that having a follow-up treatment 6 months before the product has fully dissipated will enhance the lasting effect.
Restylane is synergistic, meaning if more is administered before the product has totally dissipated, and a greater augmentation will be realized. It will seem like 1+1=3.
  • If you have previously suffered from facial cold sores, there is a risk that the needle punctures could contribute to another recurrence. Speak to your clinician about medications that may minimize a recurrence.
  • One week prior to your next treatment with Restylane, avoid taking aspirin, Motrin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications and high doses of Vitamin E.  These agents may increase bruising.  Should you require some form of medication prior, the recommendation is Tylenol only.  You may resume these medications the day after treatment.

Post Botox® Treatment Instructions

  • You should avoid lying down for four to five hours after your procedure. Do not touch the area that was treated for at least four hours. Doing so may cause Botox® to spread to other nearby muscles. In addition, your physician may recommend that you perform facial exercises that he or she will describe to you.
  • You should avoid exercise or other strenuous activities for 24 hours after your treatment. However, after that time you should be able to resume your normal activities. Speak with your physician about what he or she specifically recommends for you.
  • You should begin to notice the results from your Botox® treatment five to seven days after your procedure. The results you achieve from your initial treatment should last approximately three months. After this time, you will need to return to your clinician for more treatments. However, research shows that after each Botox® treatment the results tend to last a little longer. Eventually, most patients require treatments only once or twice a year to maintain their desired appearance.

Medication Precautions

If you want to be pro-active to decrease bruising during injection treatments such as Restylane, Botox, IPL, Laser Hair Removal and Mesotherapy; the following prescriptions and non-prescription medications, may be discontinued for at least two weeks prior to having any injection procedure to ensure that your platelets have time to recover. These specific preparations have been found to affect your blood by decreasing the amount of time it takes for coagulation and decreasing the amount of red blood cell production which can lead to increased bruising. If you are taking any  of these medications for control of a medical disorder, you will need to consult your treating physician for recommendations as to the alternatives. If you must take these medications, appropriate determinations as to whether they may be a detriment during the procedure may be discussed

Topical Anesthetic Direction

Topical anesthesia (e.g.: EMLA, Elamax, Topicaine) may be applied prior to treatment, for patients who might feel discomfort during treatment. Anesthesia should be applied as follows:

  1. Make sure the treated area is shaved and cleansed prior to applying topical anesthetic.
  2. At least one hour prior to treatment, squeeze out the ointment directly onto the skin. The ointment may be left in place for up to 3 hours without diminishing its effectiveness.
  3. Do not rub the cream onto the skin.
  4. Cover with an occlusive dressing.
  5. Immediately before treatment (and at least 45- 60 minutes after the ointment has been applied, remove the dressing and cream.
  6. Thoroughly clean and dry the entire area prior to the procedure.

Pre & Post Mesotherapy Treatment Instructions

Pre-treatment Instructions

We recommend a few simple nutrition guidelines, pre-procedure. They can make the difference between a good result and a fantastic one. Please carefully read and follow these instructions before your Mesotherapy treatments.

One week before: Exclude aspirin, gingko biloba, garlic, coenzyme Q10, flax oil, cod liver oil, vitamin A, vitamin E, and any other essential fatty acids.

24 to 48 hours before: Exclude, Niacin, high-sodium foods, high sugar foods, refined carbohydrates (you may eat fruit), avoid foods with added sugar, fructose, corn syrup, spicy foods, caffeine, alcohol, cigarettes.

The day of treatment: Eat a full breakfast or lunch depending on the time of treatment. Include a moderate amount of protein with meal and 30-40 minutes prior to your visit. Avoid refined sugar, caffeine and carbohydrates. Suggested protein: eggs, cheese, meat, fish or whey protein shake.

Occasionally, patients will experience nausea from one of the solutions used and the protein helps prevent the nausea.

  1. Drink plenty of water, & avoid caffeine.
  2. If you are being treated for cellulite, please wear a black G-string or thong. The black color accentuates the cellulite making it easier to see.
  3. Please try to wear no make-up.

Should you have any questions regarding Mesotherapy or preparation for your treatment please feel free to call our office and we will be happy to assist you.

Post-treatment Instructions

Please carefully read and follow these instructions after your Mesotherapy treatment.

Drink at least 64 ozs water day of treatment (Fiji water is recommended due to its high content of Silica), preferably more, continue water intake the first week after. Avoid of coffee, soda and high sugar drinks.

Do not wash or take a shower for at least 8 hours after your treatment. Do not take hot baths for 48 hours after your cellulite treatment. After 48 hours you may take baths as hot as you can stand them for at least 15 minutes. This will assist your body while it absorbs the bruising.

Do not use any lotions, creams or make-up for at least 6 hours after your treatment, but 24 hours is preferred.

48 hours after your procedure you may begin adding your supplements.

Avoid sun exposure for at least 48 hours after your Mesotherapy treatment.

Avoid exercise for 48 hours: Exercising causes you to sweat, which will decrease the effect of the solutions that have been injected into your tissue.

It is normal to experience: Bruising, Redness, Itching, Soreness, Swelling, Nausea, some of these can last from several hours - 30 days depending on the areas treated and medications used. Wobenzyme or Amica taken orally will also help your body heal from the bruising and swelling. They may be purchased from your local health food store. Take twice daily until bruising subsides. Vitamin K cream is also helpful after the treatment to minimize bruising.

A small percentage of patients may experience an sensitivity reaction to Hyalurondase. Should this occur, you would notice small lumps the size of quarters under your skin at the injection sites. You may take Benadryl every 6-8 hours and apply an OTC cortisone cream, (such as Hydrocort), until they subside. Please alert the office of your reaction; since it will be necessary for you to take Benadryl or a similar medication prior to your next treatment. Any allergic/sensitivity reaction will remain localized in the area of the injections and will not spread to other parts of the body.

Please call our office should you have any questions or concerns regarding your Mesotherapy treatment or aftercare.
